Background of the Study

Trust in online payment systems is one of the most critical factors influencing the growth of e-commerce. As the digital economy continues to expand, consumers are increasingly relying on online payment methods to complete transactions, yet concerns about security and fraud persist. In Nigeria, e-commerce has grown significantly in recent years, but challenges related to online payment trust remain a significant barrier to widespread adoption (Olumide, 2023). Many consumers are hesitant to make online purchases due to fears about their financial information being compromised.

In Kogi State, online retailers face the challenge of building and maintaining consumer trust in their payment systems. While various secure payment systems have been implemented, the level of consumer trust in these platforms varies. This study aims to explore the role of trust in online payment systems in influencing consumer purchasing decisions and e-commerce sales in Kogi State. By understanding the factors that affect trust, online retailers can implement strategies to increase consumer confidence and boost sales.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growth of e-commerce in Nigeria, many consumers remain skeptical about using online payment systems due to concerns over security and fraud. This lack of trust hinders the growth potential of online retail businesses, especially in Kogi State, where digital payment adoption is still relatively low. The study seeks to investigate how trust in online payment systems affects e-commerce sales and consumer behavior in Kogi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of trust in online payment systems among consumers in Kogi State.
  2. To examine how trust in online payment systems affects consumers’ willingness to make online purchases.
  3. To provide recommendations for online retailers in Kogi State to enhance consumer trust and increase e-commerce sales.

Research Questions

  1. What factors contribute to consumers’ trust in online payment systems in Kogi State?
  2. How does trust in online payment systems affect consumers’ willingness to purchase products online?
  3. What strategies can online retailers in Kogi State implement to enhance consumer trust and boost e-commerce sales?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between trust in online payment systems and the likelihood of consumers making online purchases in Kogi State.
  2. Consumers who trust online payment systems are more likely to make repeat online purchases.
  3. Online retailers that implement security measures to build trust experience higher sales in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on online retailers in Kogi State and examine the impact of trust in online payment systems on e-commerce sales. It will not cover offline retail or other regions. Limitations include the challenge of measuring trust and potential biases in consumer responses.
